One way or another someone is going to feel left out.įor those aspiring visual effects artist I can assure you that Vfx shops are using the 6k-10k software so you might have a slight advantage over some. There are a couple free ones out there, but they are somewhat limited and then there are mid to high ranged packages that cost $200-$6,000 but even that might be out of reach for many as far as price is concerned as well as features. So why Boujou? Well the real question is why not. There are a dozen programs for 3D tracking and they all share the same purpose camera matching. Think of it like the magician that gives away all of the industry secrets… except I’m not wearing a mask.

What makes this series unique is the unveiling of concepts and techniques that go beyond home movies and into the realm of high-end visual effects at a fair price. It is true, Boujou is very expensive for any individual… even many companies. You might commit to lowering prices over the next few years, but in the meantime you just optimise, add features, improve the look & feel, and hope that the competition fades into obscurity before you do.I think some people may be overlooking the purpose of the upcoming 3D tracking series…So I though I would share my master plan.

Nothing! You don't change your pricing at all. What the hell do you do when your competition undercuts you that much? Then Syntheyes (and others) came along at less than 1/10th the price, with less polish, but all the same capabilities. So back then, Boujou would pay for itself quickly enough at any price, because it let VFX studios offer an amazing new service. Before Boujou came along, it was more cost-effective to just stage VFX sequences in a way that required little or tracking. The whole idea of automated camera tracking was new at the time, so they could charge whatever they wanted and studios would still buy it because they absolutely needed it, to track steadicam and handheld camera moves. When Boujou was new, it held a monopoly on automated tracking.

If you're a car driver it's like asking why an auto shop costs more than jumper cables.Ī lot of this comes down to legacy pricing. If you're a chef it's like asking why a pasta maker costs more than a packet of ramen. If you're a gamer it's like asking why simcity costs more than farmville. If you do any 3d works at all, it's kinda like asking why maya costs more than bryce3d. I'm getting bored now but the list goes on.
